“Light On My Saddle” won the PSSC Member Award for the 6th Annual “Make Your Mark!” International Open Online Exhibition as well as 3rd Place for the show overall. Over 400 pieces were entered by talented artist from around the world. I am extremely honored to have won both awards.
This piece is my largest pastel work to date and where as I normally take my time to set up and light my chosen still life, I opted to be a spectator and leave this subject untouched. The saddle belongs to the Milano Ranch where several artists were invited to observe and paint on the beautiful property in Tehachapi. Once I saw the saddle lit up by the light coming from above in the tack room, I was drawn to paint it. The combination of the details, softly diffused light, and limited palette was a pleasant challenge to capture the serene moment.
